Going back to the early 2000's, the Clemson Tigers were considered to be one of the top teams in the ACC, but often times they lived in the shadow of the Florida State Seminoles as the only real national power in that Power 5 conference. The tide started to shift in 2008 when Dabo Swinney took over the reins as Clemson's head coach.
Heading into this Saturday's conference championship game against Pittsburgh, the Tigers are one win away from their fourth-straight ACC title as well as their fourth appearance in the College Football Playoff in as many years. Ranked No. 2 in the latest CFP Top 25, they are also heavy 27.5-point favorites at BetAnySports online sportsbook to accomplish both of these impressive feats.
The biggest thing in the Tigers' way for the slated 8 p.m. kickoff at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte this Saturday night is looking past the resurgent Panthers. In Clemson's run to the 2016 national title with a stunning upset over Alabama, its only loss that season was a 43-42 upset at home as a 21.5-point favorite against Pitt. This was the only previous meeting between the two conference foes heading into this game.
It is unlikely that the Tigers will fall prey to a false sense of security against the Panthers this time around, but from a betting standpoint, they are 1-5 against the spread this season when closing as a 21-point favorites or higher.
