2021 NFL Draft Quarterback Props

The annual college player draft in the NFL has turned into a big betting event in recent years due to a large selection of prop bet options tied to the proceedings. Most of the betting props center on the first round of 32 picks that cover the best college players that are eligible to be drafted by the league.

This year's opening round on picks from Cleveland, Ohio will kick things off on Thursday, April 29. The next two rounds of the draft will be held on Friday night and the final four rounds of picks will take place on Saturday, May 1.

Given that quarterback is the highest profile position in the NFL, it stands to reason that this position will also attract quite a bit of betting volume for the draft. Two weeks out, there is little doubt as to which quarterbacks will come off the board with the first two picks.

The odds that former Clemson standout Trevor Lawrence goes to the Jacksonville Jaguars with the first overall pick are set at -10000. This means you would have to wager $10,000 to win $100 on that bet. There is no such thing as a lock in sports betting but this is about as close as it gets.

It is also highly likely that quarterback Zach Wilson, out of BYU will go to the New York Jets at No. 2. Those betting odds are set at -3000.

Things start to get interesting at No. 3 with the San Francisco 49ers on the clock. Earlier this week, Mac Jones was a -140 favorite to come off the board next. Stock in the former Alabama quarterback slipped a bit but it was not his fault.

Former Ohio State gunslinger Justin Fields went from being a +170 second-favorite to a -190 favorite to be the 49ers' newest quarterback. This major shift in the betting odds is tied to his impressive showing during a pro day workout with San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan in attendance. He made note of how good Fields looked on social media and the Oddsmakers took notice.

Given that kind of swing in betting value, you really need to pay close attention to all the major mock draft boards right now. Nobody knows for sure what each team will do with a coveted first round pick. I would guess that most of the 32 teams do not even know who they are going to draft when they are on the clock come April 29.

However, if you are willing to put in some extra time, you can capitalize on any number of prop bet options where the odds can swing in your favor.

Your best bet is to keep your ear to the ground for news connected to the draft. With two weeks left in each team's vetting process anything and everything is subject to change.

Moving down the list of available quarterbacks on this year's NFL draft board, you can get +300 odds that more than 5 1/2 will be selected in the opening round. The first four mentioned above are obvious first rounders.

You can safely add former North Dakota quarterback Trey Lance to this list at No. 5. The big question is will any team make a reach at this position with a first round pick? The betting odds say NO with the odds set at -500 for UNDER 5 1/2 quarterbacks drafted in the first round.

The books must know something that the bettors do not with such high odds posted. I still think a small play on the OVER is well worth the risk verse the inflated return.

One quarterback that could swing this bet OVER 5 1/2 is Kellen Mond, who spent his college career at Texas Tech. Former Florida quarterback Kyle Trask is another possibility.

A likely landing spot for a sixth quarterback could be New Orleans at No. 28. With Drew Brees retired, head coach Sean Peyton might be tempted to make that reach I am betting on.

Finding the Best Betting Value in 2021 Kentucky Derby Futures

Two weeks from Saturday, horse racing's biggest betting event returns to its rightful place on the first Saturday in May. The 2021 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs is slated for Saturday, May 1 as part of a daily race card filled with a number of exciting graded events.

The prep schedule for this year's Kentucky Derby came to a close last Saturday with Super Stock pulling off a thrilling upset in the 2021 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park. Concert Tour was the odd-on favorite to win but he faded to third behind Caddo River.

Following that race, BetOnline sportsbook updated its Kentucky Derby futures board. The current Top Five contenders to win are:

Essential Quality +300

Rock Your World +600

Known Agenda +700

Concert Tour +1000

Hot Rod Charlie +1000

If you are the type of bettor that likes to go chalk with the favorite, you cannot go wrong with an early wager on Essential Quality. As a champion two-year old, he won both the Breeders' Futurity and the Breeders Cup Juvenile at Keeneland Racecourse.

Trained by Brad Cox, the son of Tapit moved his winning streak to five with victories in the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park and Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland to start his three-year old campaign. Right now on paper, he is the best colt in the projected  2021 Kentucky Derby field.

With Concert Tour's disappointing run in the Arkansas Derby, trainer Bob Baffert has yet to commit to running him at Churchill on May 1. This is still a quality contender but his stock fell sharply in my book.

Taking his place at the same longer +1000 odds is trainer Doug O'Neill's Hot Rod Charlie. Ever since this Kentucky-bred colt stunned the field at Keenland with a second-place finish in the 2020 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, he has been on my betting radar.

The son of Oxbow saved his best for last during the recent prep season by winning the Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds in late March. Things may change come Derby Day but I am definitely betting him to win at +1000 on BetOnline's futures board.

With Super Stock's big win at Oaklawn, there is also some solid value in his even longer +2800 odds right now. Moving up in class to beat all the three-year old Thoroughbreds higher on the list would be a tall task but he definitely deserves a spot on my 'watch' list.

As far as the other two colts in the top five, Rock Your World made the list by winning this year's Santa Anita Derby and Known Agenda moved up the board with a victory at Gulfstream Park in the Florida Derby.

Concert Tour Favored in the 2021 Arkansas Derby

The final major prep race for this year's Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 1 at Churchill Downs will take place this Saturday at Oaklawn Park with the running of the $1 million Grade 1 Arkansas Derby.

The limited field has six contenders listed as entered. Leading the way is Concert Tour as a 3-5 favorite on the morning line breaking out of the No. 5 gate. Trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by jockey Joel Rosario, this Kentucky-bred colt is already one of the favorites to win at Churchill less than a month from now.

Coming off a victory in the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn last month, the son of Street Sense is undefeated in three starts as a three-year old. A victory in the Arkansas Derby would close the gap in the Kentucky Derby futures odds. Essential Quality is currently listed as a +375 favorite. Concert Tour is next on that list at +450 betting odds.

Rounding out the Top 5 Kentucky Derby contenders on BetOnline's futures board are Rock Your World at +700 with Hot Rod Charlie and Highly Motivated at +1200.

The second favorite to win this year's Arkansas Derby is Caddo River at 7-2 morning line odds. This three-year old Kentucky-bred colt is trained by Brian Cox. He will break from the No. 2 post with jockey Florent Geroux on board.

Of the six colts entered in Saturday's featured event at Oaklawn, five of the contenders recently faced one another in the Rebel Stakes. The lone addition is Last Samurai at 30-1 odds. He placed fifth his last time out in the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn in late February.

FanDuel Inks a New Sponsorship Deal With Two Iconic Sports Franchises

As part of a new weekly news feature for Doc's Sports, I covered FanDuel's recent sponsorship deal with MLB's Detroit Tigers and the NHL's Detroit Red Wings. This new partnership is also tied to MotorCity Casino Hotel and the FanDuel Sportsbook located in that Detroit-based casino property.

FanDuel has quickly grown to become a major player in the rapidly expanding US sports betting industry. Michigan has already established itself as a hotbed for legal sports betting among the 20+ states that currently offer sports betting within their borders in some form.

Best Bets for a Top 5 Masters Finish

Professional golf's first Major of the 2021 season gets underway this week with Thursday's opening round of the Masters at Augusta National Golf Course in Georgia.

The best players in the world have been invited to one of the most exclusive golf courses in the world to compete for the most prestigious title in their sport. This competition as also turned into a major betting event over the years.

Last year's Masters had to be moved to November from its traditional early-April timeframe. Dustin Johnson proved to be the best golfer that week, and just six months later, he his back at Augusta to defend his title as the clear favorite to win.

The easiest way to bet on the Masters is putting down some money on the outright winner after four rounds of play. This is also the hardest bet to win. Johnson will be surrounded by a strong field where anyone can get hot enough to win.

A more realistic bet to win that still offers a high-value return is betting on a player to post a Top 5 finish. As part of my 2021 Masters' coverage for the popular sports betting website ScoresandStats.com, I broke down the top five players in this year's field in terms of the best betting value for finishing in the Top 5 this week.

The Santa Anita Derby Highlights Saturday's Kentucky Derby Preps Schedule

The first Saturday in April is an excellent lead in to this year's Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 1. Three key prep races will be staged coast to coast as a way to finalize the 20-horse field for the annual Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

Starting at Aqueduct Racetrack in New York, the featured race on this Saturday's card is the Grade 2 Wood Memorial with a total prize purse of $750,000 and Kentucky Derby qualifying points for a top four finish. The three-year old colt to watch in this race is Weyburn at 9/2 odds with Risk Taking set as the 5/2 favorite on the morning line.

Moving to the home of Thoroughbred racing, this year's Grade 2 Bluegrass Stakes at Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington, Kentucky is offering an $800,000 prize purse with Kentucky Derby qualifying points.

This is another deep field led by Essential Quality. This Kentucky-bred colt was a champion two-year old and he won the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park in his three-year old debut. A win at Keeneland on Saturday would cement his status as an early favorite to win this year's Kentucky Derby.

The highlight of Saturday's live card of horse racing is the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby out on the West Coast at Santa Anita Park. This key prep has $750,000 up for grabs along with qualifying points.

Famed West Coast trainer Bob Baffert is looking to run his prized Florida-bred colt Medina Spirit in Saturday's featured event. Two more entries to work into the betting mix would be Roman Centurion and The Great One.

As part of my weekly horse racing coverage for the popular sports betting site ScoresandStats.com, I previewed all three of these races with my best bet picks in the following post:
